The Strangest Motorhomes Ever Spotted On The Street
Most of us don't consider motorhomes to be too crazy, at least at first. However, there have been some crazy RVs developed throughout the decades.
Anything from a spaceship-like amphibious vehicle, all the way to simply adding a roof box to a Swedish sedan. These are the craziest motorhomes and RVs ever made.
GM Futurliner
![GM Futurliner by General Motors GM Futurliner by General Motors](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/gm-futurliner-by-general-motors.-72038.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
The Futurliner was a series of crazy art-deco motor homes designed in the late 30s. Today, Futurliners have become highly sought-after by collectors worldwide. Only 12 units were made in total. It is estimated that only 9 of them still exist to this day.
The original Futurliner came powered by a four-cylinder diesel powerplant, though GM decided to replace it with a 6-cylinder gas motor by the early 50s.
Carling Home Sport Louvet No. 3
![Louvet's Mobile Home Louvet's Mobile Home](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/louvets-mobile-home.-39515.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
Roughly a century ago, motorhomes were nowhere near as popular as they are today. As a result, inventors around the world came up with some pretty clever RV concepts. Charles Louvet was one of them.
The Carling Home Sport Louvet No. 3 was his most popular creation. This streamlined motor home was designed to be easier to maneuver than its predecessor, which was over 30 feet long! The triangular windows along with the canoe installed on the roof are perhaps the most distinctive features of this innovative RV.
Atomic Camper
![atomic-camper-is-still-the-worlds-coolest-handmade-rv-still-on-the-road_3 atomic-camper-is-still-the-worlds-coolest-handmade-rv-still-on-the-road_3](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/atomic-camper-is-still-the-worlds-coolest-handmade-rv-still-on-the-road_3-95624.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
This could very well be one of the coolest custom motor homes in existence. The Atomic Camper may not be the most spacious trailer in the world. In fact, it measures just 16 feet in length.
The cartoonish spaceship-like design makes the Atomic Camper truly unique in the world of motorhomes. The custom trailer can be spotted throughout Alaska.
The Longest Custom VW
![a54d8cb625dad3a7911b887dcbf77e11.jpg.pagespeed.ce.EnE2i37g9U a54d8cb625dad3a7911b887dcbf77e11.jpg.pagespeed.ce.EnE2i37g9U](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/a54d8cb625dad3a7911b887dcbf77e11.pagespeed.ce_.EnE2i37g9U-51189.jpg?width=800&height=533)
This motorhome is ideal for large families, bachelor getaways, and anything in between. The trailer is ridiculously long! In fact, this custom VW truck would make a semi look small and cozy.
It's hard to guess just how many passengers would fit in this monstrosity. One thing's for sure, there would be enough room for plenty of friends and family.
The Fiery Camper
![13 Spectacular Retro Campers, RVs, Motorhomes, & Crazy Conversions 13 Spectacular Retro Campers, RVs, Motorhomes, & Crazy Conversions](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/13-Spectacular-Retro-Campers-RVs-Motorhomes-Crazy-Conversions-95232.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
This motorhome used to be a boring sedan from the 1950s. Luckily, it's been transformed into quite a crazy RV. It's spacious enough for a weekend in the forest, and small enough to drive around town too.
Nothing speaks style like a fiery paint job. Especially when it's combined with a streamlined, aluminum rear end and a set of whitewall tires.
Saab 900
![The Ten Coolest Campers Ever Made The Ten Coolest Campers Ever Made](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/The-Ten-Coolest-Campers-Ever-Made-22046.jpeg?b=0&c=0&width=800&height=533&top=0&left=132&zoom=0.78962962963)
This Saab motorhome may not be the most sophisticated RV in existence. That said, it may just make it even cooler.
Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. The owner of this Saab simply slapped a boxy top on the roof of the car and called it a day. It gets the job done, that's for sure.
The Classy Dodge Truck
![_squeee_ _squeee_](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/squeee_-93610.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
A 1940s Dodge Power Wagon is a cool vehicle in its own right. Slapping a trailer in the rear to turn it into a camper is even cooler, though.
Off-road tires indicate that this Dodge Power Wagon is still capable of some serious off-roading. Just remember to unhitch the trailer first.
Boat On Wheels
![unnamed2 unnamed2](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed2-41647.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
Look closer, pay attention to the details, and maybe you'll be able to appreciate the brains behind this concept. You'd definitely stand out driving this quirky thing around. To be honest, it looks like a roadgoing boat rather than an RV.
The back is reserved as a living space, as every motorhome should. The driver sits in the front and can feel like a real boat captain!
Art-Deco Truck
![tmCzSw0X_4x tmCzSw0X_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/tmCzSw0X_4x-12323.jpg?width=800&height=491)
This beauty is ideal for those who are looking for style above all else. After all, who doesn't love Art Deco automobiles and trucks?
The trailer can accommodate an entire family, making this beast perfect for a weekend getaway. It has got to be hard to maneuver, so you will probably want to stick to major highways.
Tesla Cybertruck And Its Cybertrailer
![unnamed unnamed](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-70807.jpg?width=800&height=441)
It doesn’t matter how you feel about the electric vehicle. It was a shock to the automotive industry. No pun intended.
Since the truck's high bed wings would make connecting or even turning a trailer difficult, a fifth-wheel attachment is required for this glamorous setup. The design of most conventional motorhomes has not changed too much in the last few years. This is clearly an exception.
The Gooseneck Bug
![unnamed (1) unnamed (1)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-1-16251.jpg?width=800&height=365)
Theoretically speaking, towing a gooseneck trailer is pretty simple. All you need is to hook it up to the top of the frame of a car or truck, and you're good to go. Whoever came up with this motorhome may have taken it too literally.
You are bound to stick out in traffic when driving this quirky thing around, that's for sure. The Gooseneck Bug proves that anything can be turned into an RV with just a bit of imagination.
The Road Boat
![road_boat-jan25a road_boat-jan25a](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/road_boat-jan25a-55255.jpg?width=800&height=533)
Can't decide whether you want a boat or a truck? The Road Boat is the answer! This outrageous motorhome is unlike anything you've ever seen before. On a hot summer day, the driver can climb the top deck and operate the RV from there.
We would not recommend trying it out on the water, though.
The Happy Ultra Van
![EPjZy9Gw_4x EPjZy9Gw_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/EPjZy9Gw_4x-89464.jpg?width=800&height=533)
This is far from your average motorhome. A quick peek at its cute front end is surely enough to fall in love with it.
Ultra Vans date back to the first half of the 20th century. The people behind these unique creations often borrowed parts from airplanes to turn their visions to life. How cool is that?
Enormous Expedition Truck
![Cars Beach On Romo Island, Denmark Cars Beach On Romo Island, Denmark](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/cars-beach-on-romo-island-denmark.-68486.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
This is the kind of motorhomes that can go just about anywhere in the world. Oh, and it has plenty of space for passengers and cargo, too.
You can pick up a custom expedition truck, too. Pricing starts at roughly $300 000 for the not-so-ridiculous models. Expect to pay over half a million bucks for the coolest ones, though.
The Overkill
![unnamed (4) unnamed (4)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-4-61313.jpg?width=800&height=466)
There is no doubt that this monstrosity can be taken just about anywhere in the world. The regular truck was already quite cool, and adding a custom camping trailer to it only made it better!
This custom motor home is owned by a couple in South Australia. This should come as no surprise. It can surely conquer all of the Outback.
1954 Chevrolet Tourliner
![unnamed (5) unnamed (5)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-5-49105.jpg?width=800&height=533)
This motorhome is a dream come true for every hotrodder out there. It's built on a 1954 Chevrolet COE platform!
Naturally, this beast comes with all the modern amenities you would expect in a high-end RV. That includes custom Dakota Digital gauges, as well as an audio system by JVC/Pioneer. The car also comes with heated seats and power windows.
The Pop-up Trailer
![unnamed (4) unnamed (4)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-4-83467.jpg?width=800&height=533)
Why choose between a tent and a trailer when you can have both in one? These towable rigs don't have to be as heavy or expensive as their larger versions when folded up. In fact, they're nearly small enough to fit in your pocket.
Unlike camping in a van or a tent, a pop-up camper provides a more comfortable and convenient experience. Frankly speaking, it's the best of both worlds!
The Racer
![unnamed (6) unnamed (6)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-6-58684.jpg?width=800&height=533)
Getting all of your equipment to and from the track is a major inconvenience for any motorsport freak, to say the least. Luckily, someone has come up with the ideal solution.
This motorhome features a small living space right behind the cabin, as well as a flatbed to transport your racecar. Driving to the racetrack has never been this easy.
The Hotrod RV
![r37kvOhs_4x r37kvOhs_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/r37kvOhs_4x-47999.jpg?width=800&height=533)
Similar to the previously mentioned '54 Chevy COE, this is yet another motorhome that will appeal to hotrodders. Only this time, the design is a bit more contemporary.
This RV features a cab borrowed from a vintage truck, and a stylish airstream-like living compartment in the rear.
The Flower Power
![98th European Motor Show 98th European Motor Show](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/98th-european-motor-show.-22843.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
The Volkswagen Type 2 was introduced after the Beetle. It quickly became adored by the Hippie culture, and soon became a cult classic in its own right.
T1s with custom flower paint jobs could be seen roaming all over the US throughout the 60s. They still make pretty cool retro motorhomes today, to be completely honest.
Long Wheelbase Truck
![51dcbc4c26bba48fa7fe79c4648af5b5 51dcbc4c26bba48fa7fe79c4648af5b5](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/51dcbc4c26bba48fa7fe79c4648af5b5-46278.jpg?width=800&height=533)
This motor home is perfect for those who need quite a bit of space. After all, a long-wheelbase pickup truck converted into an RV is going to be a lot more roomy than a regular trailer.
Maneuvering this monstrosity around a busy town would be quite a challenge, though! It would probably be best to just stick to freeways.
Minty Bus
![Camping Camping](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/camping.-45311.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
Buses turned into RVs are always a cool sight. Especially when they're in mint condition! No pun intended.
What makes this motorhome even cooler is its colorful paintjob. The mint-green touches ideally fit the white paint, as well as the shiny front end.
The Little Green Trailer
![unnamed1 unnamed1](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed1-15243.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
This tiny house may be the most incredible thing you've ever seen in a small town. It has a shell-like appearance. You could bring it to a campsite, but it would fit right into the heart of a busy city!
Perhaps the green paint, the porch that comes down, and the awning that rises conjure up memories of a more bygone era. To be honest, we could live in it full-time.
Ford Escort Dormobile Elba
![1968 Ford Escort Dormobile Elba. Creator: Unknown. 1968 Ford Escort Dormobile Elba. Creator: Unknown.](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/1968-ford-escort-dormobile-elba.-creator-unknown.-86013.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
Dormobile is a UK-based company that has been converting automobiles into campers for decades. The Escort Elba is just one of the many projects done by the company.
The Ford Escort Dormobile Elba became a hit among motor home enthusiasts. It proved, once and for all, that any vehicle is good enough to be turned into an RV!
Massive Expedition Truck
![9VHYvPDn_4x 9VHYvPDn_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/9VHYvPDn_4x-16697.jpg?width=800&height=533)
Let's be honest, this motorhome is quite ridiculous even in the world of expedition trucks. At first sight, it's hard to see whether this is an RV or an apocalypse truck. Perhaps this is a bit of both.
The enormous tires indicate that this is yet another motorhome that can perform exceptionally off the beaten paths. It looks like cargo space won't be an issue, either.
1938 Turtle
![unnamed (10) unnamed (10)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-10-41674.jpg?width=800&height=533)
J. Roy Hunt will be remembered more for his work as a cinematographer than for his driving. Hunt was frequently away from home for long periods of time. That may have sparked one of his quirkiest interests.
RV building was his most unusual hobby. The Turtle is a motorhome from 1938 designed by J. Roy Hunt himself. Talk about leaving behind a legacy!
A Hotrodder's Dream
![unnamed (11) unnamed (11)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-11-91147.jpg?width=800&height=533)
As silly as it may sound, hotrods could theoretically double as great workhorses. Their new drivetrains are not only loud and powerful, but also reliable. These cars would pull well, if they were built with towing in mind that is.
This motorhome is ideal for a true hotrodder, perhaps even more than the previously mentioned Chevy COE. We'll try not to think how much reinforcement and bracing were needed for the roof to hold that weight, though.
Futuria Motorhome
![unnamed (19) unnamed (19)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-19-59013.jpg?width=800&height=533)
This could very well be considered the Rolls Royce of motorhomes. The Futuria RV is one of the most lavish in the world. Its car storage in the rear of the truck, big enough to fit a supercar, hints just how luxurious this thing is.
Most passengers would probably spend a big chunk of the day hanging out on the rooftop, though. The Futuria, which was once a semi-truck, is the absolute peak of luxury RVs.
The Optimus Prime
![R5g63nep_4x R5g63nep_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/R5g63nep_4x-40237.jpg?b=0&c=0&width=800&height=533&top=63&left=57&zoom=0.740740740741)
For those who watch Transformers, the age of Ultron is now upon us. What else would you call this motorhome, if not the Optimus Prime?
This motorhome features the front end of a semi-truck. However, the rear rides on the same platform as opposed to being a separate trailer. That's quite a unique design!
The Blue GMC
![unnamed (12) unnamed (12)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-12-10592.jpg?b=0&c=0&width=800&height=533&top=49&left=0&zoom=1.19940029985)
This quirky creation has got to be the most creative use of a GMC RV chassis we've ever seen. This beauty was built on a '73 GMC RV, combined with a COE truck cab.
The final product looks like an Airstream design with a rather ridiculous twist. The chrome finish and blue fender covers look marvelous. This motorhome can also be driven from the top deck!
Ford C900 RV
![unnamed (14) unnamed (14)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-14-56380.jpg?width=800&height=446)
The C900 was a commercial truck built by Ford throughout the 70s. It was offered with a variety of different gas and diesel engines under the hood.
Driving this Ford C900 RV is like traveling back in time to the 70s. The paint job has seen better days though, that's for sure.
Oldschool Camper
![unnamed (9) unnamed (9)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-9-86799.jpg?width=800&height=533)
Ever wondered what motorhomes looked like a hundred years ago? This green truck is a pristine example.
Sure, it may not be as sophisticated as modern RVs with flatscreen TVs, heated floors, and other features. It was certainly able to get the job done. In fact, traveling in one of these vintage campers could even be more fun.
Classic Wooden RV
![unnamed (15) unnamed (15)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-15-47668.jpg?width=800&height=533)
Talk about style. Rolling into the campground in one of these is probably a bucket list experience for most RV enthusiasts. It's easy to see why.
The wooden structure is both spacious and stylish. However, the pristine cab is perhaps the most distinctive feature of this classy motorhome.
The Semi Truck
![YIZBk0Fd_4x YIZBk0Fd_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/YIZBk0Fd_4x-66601.jpg?b=0&c=0&width=800&height=533&top=61&left=44&zoom=0.740740740741)
In some cases, even the most spacious RVs just won't cut it. Transforming a semi-truck into a motorhome is quite a bold move. However, you'll never run out of space again.
The fact that the trailer extends to the sides, as well as up, hints that the living space consists of two stories. That's quite a bit of space indeed.
Art-Deco Retro Bus
![9PpIiaH3_4x 9PpIiaH3_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/9PpIiaH3_4x-55313.jpg?width=800&height=387)
This is yet another awesome retro bus that has been converted into a motorhome. The streamlined design ensures it stands out on the road. You can be sure that it's not just an average old bus!
Stylish design aside, this RV surely packs quite a bit of space too. After all, it's a whole bus.
Surface Orbiter
![unnamed (13) unnamed (13)](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/unnamed-13-22638.jpg?b=0&c=0&width=800&height=533&top=0&left=24&zoom=1.39895013123)
To be completely honest, this creation wasn't exactly developed to be a regular RV. Instead, this amphibious vehicle was built to be a custom hotrod showcased at events throughout the country.
The Surface Orbiter was awarded the Hot Rod of the Year title back in 1986. It would double as a super cool RV, too.
The Super Bugger
![I9YyKGjRTDaycOidLu7PeQ I9YyKGjRTDaycOidLu7PeQ](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/I9YyKGjRTDaycOidLu7PeQ-13750.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
The Super Bugger is a unique RV that's part Volkswagen and part camper. It's far from your typical motorhome, that's for sure.
These quirky campervans date back to the 70s, when a California-based company decided to convert VW Beetles into motorhomes. It's unlike any other motorhome on the road!
Livin' Lite Camplite
![c6gMZdYI_4x c6gMZdYI_4x](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/c6gMZdYI_4x-46162.jpeg?b=0&c=0&width=800&height=533&top=97&left=44&zoom=0.740740740741)
The Camplite is an innovative, tiny trailer that was unveiled back in 2009 by Livin Lite. The body is made from aluminum to save weight. They were built to last, making the perfect addition to an overland automobile.
The Camplite may not be the most spacious trailer in existence, but it's certainly large enough to get the job done. The design is unique, too!
Volkner Performance S
![Caravan Salon Düsseldorf Caravan Salon Düsseldorf](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/caravan-salon-dusseldorf.-46413.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
Not being able to store your luxurious hypercar isn't exactly a common problem among RV owners. Nonetheless, it can be an issue for some people.
Luckily, Volkner has come up with the perfect solution. The Performance S RV features a compartment that can store a Bugatti Chiron. That way, you can take your multi-million dollar hypercar along!
Airstream Trailer
![Trailer sits at makeshift campsite outside of Blue Point Brewing Company in Patchogue, New York Trailer sits at makeshift campsite outside of Blue Point Brewing Company in Patchogue, New York](https://www.brakeforit.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/trailer-sits-at-makeshift-campsite-outside-of-blue-point-brewing-company-in-patchogue-new-york.-40446.jpeg?width=800&height=533)
We all love Airstream trailers. These legendary American caravans have been around for around a century now. Today, they're cooler than ever before!
The Airstream photographed above is one of the latest models built by the manufacturer. It provides a perfect mix of classic styling and modern amenities.
