In September, 2019, Consumer Reports published its list of car insurance company ratings, and the best insurer on the block might not be who you think. USAA staked its claim as the best of the best. Meanwhile, top marketing spenders such as Geico and Progressive ranked in the middle of the pack.

In total, 53 car insurers were looked at. The top four, USAA, PEMCO, NJM, and Amica were given the highest grades by consumers. And can you guess what the highest grade they all had in common was?

Overall satisfaction.

It was USAA, however, that earned high marks in every single category, which included claims settlements, price paid for premiums, non-claims customer service, proactive attempts by the insurer to provide help and advice to customers, and thoroughness of policy reviews with customers.

If there is any downside about the top four companies that could be concerning for the average American, it's that three of them offer limited eligibility. USAA, for example, while available in every state, only covers military service members of their families.

The only company without eligibility restrictions is Amica, which is based in Rhode Island and offers plans in every state except Hawaii.
