Car buyers are blessed with a range of exciting new models every single year. Unfortunately, not all vehicles are hits on the market. In fact, some may even fail to sell at all.
The following vehicles were discontinued either due to awful sales, outdated technology, or a mix of both!
Car buyers in the United States aren’t too fond of station wagons. It seems that some manufacturers had to learn this the hard way. Sadly, Volvo is one of them.
The Volvo V90 station wagon is confirmed not to return to the US market after the 2021 model year. However, buyers can still order the Cross Country version which comes with a lift kit and wide fenders.
The Evora may very well be one of the most underrated sports cars of the 21st century. The Lotus Evora was developed to be a more practical alternative to the track-oriented Elise. The vehicle debuted for the 2010 model year.
The British automaker announced its Vision80 strategy, which focuses on new products and electrification of the entire lineup. Sadly, the gas-powered Evora does not align with Lotus’ plans. The model will be discontinued after the 2021 model year.
The BMW i3 made international news when it was released for the 2013 model year. EVs were nowhere near as popular a decade ago as they are today. Though its range and performance were acceptable in 2013, the i3 had quickly become outdated.
It does seem a little ridiculous to pay nearly $50,000 for a supermini with a range of just 153 miles, at least by today’s standards. The German automaker will discontinue the model in the US after 2021.
Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Convertible
A convertible Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG seemed like the ideal mix of luxury and performance. A 603-horsepower V8 motor under the hood did manage to lure in some buyers. The demand for a two-door drop-top S-Class was never high, though.
A plummet in sales figures was just one of the reasons that forced the automaker to pull the drop-top S63 from the lineup. Regular two-door S-Class coupes and convertibles can no longer be ordered, either.
This is yet another Volvo station wagon that shares the same faith as the previously mentioned V90. This model is a little smaller than the V90. Other than that, they’re quite similar.
Both the V90 and the V60 are going to be discontinued after the 2021 model year. Like the V90, the V60 Cross Country will still be sold in the US in 2022.
The Golf has been a crucial part of Volkswagen’s lineup for decades. In fact, the German automaker has been selling this hatchback in the US ever since the 1975 model year.
Though the base model Golf will not be available in the United States after 2021, buyers will still be able to order the sporty GTI and R variants. As of today, Volkswagen has no plans to stop selling high-performance versions of the Golf in the US.
Despite the ever-growing demand for crossover SUVs, car buyers did not fall in love with the CX-3. The Japanese automaker decided to stop producing the model after the 2021 model year.
The CX-30 hit the market back in 2020 and indicated that the production of the CX-3 may be coming to an end. The rumors soon proved to be true. Now’s the final chance to get a brand new unit.
Rolls Royce Dawn
The demand for luxurious drop-tops keeps dropping year by year, and the Rolls Royce Dawn is yet another prime example. The British automaker only sold around 300 vehicles in the US in 2018. The Dawn, a lavish two-door convertible, is likely only a tiny percentage of that number.
Rolls Royce will no longer offer the Dawn in the United States after the end of the 2021 model year. It’s not the only model that will be discontinued soon, though.
The Mazda6 has always been one of the best sedans in its price range, ever since the car’s 2002 debut. It was the go-to pick for auto enthusiasts who wanted something practical, yet exciting. Sadly, buyers will not be able to buy a brand new Mazda6 anymore.
A plummet in sales forced the automaker to discontinue the model after the 2021 model year. The vehicle is rumored to make a comeback within the coming years, though.
The Volkswagen Passat has always been one of the top picks in its price range, at least on the European market. In the United States, however, it never really made as much sense to buy one of these practical intermediate cars.
For the past few years, the Passat became overshadowed by its more upscale alternative, the Arteon, as well as the more affordable Jetta. Following a decline in sales, VW decided to drop the model from its US lineup in 2022.
Let’s face it, the Honda Clarity has always been a pretty dull model in the lineup. Sure, it’s comfortable and gets good fuel economy. It isn’t particularly exciting though. Perhaps that’s the reason why the Japanese automaker decided to pull the plug.
The Clarity will be discontinued for 2022. This includes the plug-in hybrid, the fully electric version, as well as the hydrogen fuel cell variant.
The history of Polestar dates back to the mid-90s, back when it was launched as a performance-oriented subsidiary of the Swedish automaker. Then, in 2017, Polestar became an automaker in its own right. The Polestar 1 became its flagship automobile.
Despite its stunning looks and impressive performance, the Polestar 1 was never a popular choice among US buyers. Polestar decided to pull the plug on the model, at least in the US. 2021 was the final year to buy one here.
Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R
The AMG GT R was introduced for the 2017 model year as a souped-up version of the AMG GT grand tourer. The car packs a 577-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 motor, allowing the AMG GT R to reach 60 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds!
Earlier this year, the German automaker unveiled the AMG GT Black Series. It’s the ultimate variant of Mercedes’ flagship grand tourer. The GT R was discontinued, as the Black Series is considered its successor.
Despite being a solid pick within its price range, the Kia Cadenza has never been a hit among US buyers. In fact, annual US sales dropped from over 7,200 units in 2017 to just 1,250 in 2020.
The Korean automaker decided to pull the Cadenza sedan from the US market due to low sales. The sporty Kia Stinger is rumored to be next in line.
Toyota Land Cruiser
The Toyota Land Cruiser has been a vital part of the automaker’s lineup for a little over 6 decades. The Japanese manufacturer managed to build over 10 million units of the car throughout its lengthy production run.
Toyota has announced that the Land Cruiser nameplate will be retired after the 2021 model year. The Heritage Edition was unveiled for the Land Cruiser’s final year to celebrate the legendary SUV.
The Ford EcoSport was relatively successful in terms of sales. In fact, the Blue Oval sold over 67,000 units in its best year. However, the model is getting dropped from the lineup by 2022.
The retirement of the EcoSport is indeed well-deserved. Although it only hit the US market back in 2018, the second-gen EcoSport had been in production for nearly a decade!
Hyundai Ioniq Electric
The fully electric variant of the Hyundai Ioniq compact car will not be sold after 2021. The Ioniq EV was not exactly adored by US buyers, with units sold only in 13 states. A range of just 170 miles on a single charge was far less than most competitors, too.
Don’t worry, the hybrid and plug-in hybrids will remain on the market through 2022. The fully electric variant is dropped from the automaker’s lineup in favor of the Kona EV, though.
It is no secret that the vast majority of car buyers prefer SUVs over sedans. The Toyota Avalon failed to attract enough buyers, hence the manufacturer decided to discontinue the model by 2022.
Despite canceling the Avalon, a spokesperson for Toyota announced that an all-new sedan will be revealed to fill its spot sometime soon.
The Lamborghini Aventador needs no introduction. This V12-powered supercar has been one of the brand’s best sellers ever since its 2011 debut. The monstrous Aventador is inspired by legendary Lamborghinis of the past and was originally introduced to replace the Murcielago.
After a decade on the market, the Italian automaker decided to finally retire the model. A successor, confirmed to be powered by a V12 plug-in hybrid drivetrain, is set to arrive sometime in 2023.
Honda Civic Coupe
Car buyers in the United States clearly are not fans of two-door cars. Surprisingly, both expensive and affordable cars are affected. The Honda Civic Coupe is a prime example.
Honda has decided to pull the two-door Civic from the market back in 2019, and it can no longer be ordered since the 2021 model year.
Alfa Romeo 4C Spider
Quirky styling paired with excellent performance clearly wasn’t enough to draw in buyers. The Alfa Romeo 4C was perhaps a little too crazy for mass production. Its price tag was rather high, too.
Alfa Romeo discontinued the 4C Coupe back in 2019, indicating that the end for its drop-top counterpart was near too. The 4C Spider was dropped from the lineup for 2021.
Rolls Royce Wraith
The two-door Rolls Royce Wraith is leaving the US market along with the previously mentioned Dawn. Both vehicles are built on a BMW 7-Series platform.
As the German automaker announced the discontinuation of the platform, it was obvious that the Wraith would be dropped from the lineup too. Rolls Royce has not announced whether or not we will see a replacement. Only time will tell.
Ferrari 488 Pista
The Ferrari 488 Pista is a high-performance supercar based on the regular 488. It was developed, much like its successors such as the 458 Speciale or the 430 Scuderia, as a more hardcore alternative to the base model.
After just a couple of years on the market, the Italian automaker has replaced the model with the all-new F8 Tributo. The 488 Pista was discontinued, along with the base 488, for the 2021 model year.
Ford F-150 Diesel
One variant of America’s best-selling pickup truck of all time will not return for the 2022 model year. The diesel-powered F-150 came powered by a 3.0L V6 rated at 250 horses and 440 lb-ft of torque.
The latest F-150 hybrid peaks at 430 horsepower, which is nearly 200 horses more than the diesel variant. As a result, Ford felt that a diesel F150 is no longer needed on the market. The model is dropped from the lineup in 2022.
The Hyundai Veloster wasn’t exactly a practical choice for potential buyers. That’s probably one of the primary reasons why it’s getting pulled from the US market after the end of the 2021 model year. Luckily, the Veloster is going to be replaced by its high-performance counterpart.
The Hyundai Veloster N is hitting the US market for the 2022 model year. The car comes powered by a 275hp four-cylinder motor. The Korean automaker promises outstanding handling, too.
Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe
The two-door variant of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will no longer be available in 2022. This goes for the previously mentioned drop-top S63 AMG, as well as its coupe counterpart. Sadly, the two-door variant of Mercedes’ land yacht failed to draw in enough buyers.
The discontinuation of the two-door S-Class came only a year after dropping the SLC-class from the lineup.
The K900 is Kia’s second luxury sedan that was offered on the US market, alongside the previously mentioned Cadenza. Just like the Cadenza, the K900 was an absolute failure in terms of sales figures.
The K900 and Cadenza were officially dropped from the lineup back in early 2021. However, buyers could still pick up any leftover units throughout the year.
The i8 was truly breathtaking when it first debuted for the 2014 model year. The hybrid drivetrain was impressive, and the styling remains out of this world. However, the car was far from perfect.
The BMW i8 proved to be far too expensive and underpowered. Its $150,000 starting price wasn’t exactly justified. As a result, the German automaker only sold 20 000 units worldwide before discontinuing the model in 2020.
Cadillac’s lavish sedan, along with its performance-oriented CT6-V variant, have both been discontinued by 2021. Although the vehicle was upscale and stylish, its enormous price tag was not exactly justified.
The CT6-V was by far the most exciting version of this Cadillac sedan. It came fitted with a twin-turbocharged 4.2L V8 motor rated at a whopping 500 horsepower. Sadly, it wasn’t enough to convince buyers to splash out on one.
It’s official, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat will be discontinued after 2023. Buyers only have two years to pick up a brand new Dodge Challenger in its most powerful version. The Challenger, as well as the Dodge Hellcat engine, will both be gone by 2024.
There still is a bit of hope for other variants of the Challenger. It may be re-imagined as an EV, just like the Ford Mustang Mach E. Dodge has teased a mysterious third vehicle that will join the lineup. It’s rumored to be unveiled sometime in 2022.
BMW M8 Coupe & Convertible
The M8 is easily one of the most impressive M cars of all time. Sadly, it can no longer be ordered as a two-door coupe. The convertible variant was dropped from the automaker’s lineup, too. All this happened merely two years after the car’s debut!
The lack of demand for luxury coupes and convertibles is pretty obvious. The BMW M8 Coupe has retired by 2021, alongside two-door versions of the Mercedes-Benz S Class.
The Fiat 500L is one of just two models offered by the Italian automaker in the US. Sales peaked at around 12,000 units a few years, and they had plummeted ever since. In fact, Fiat only sold 475 500Ls in 2020.
The 500L was theoretically discontinued after the 2020 model year. Throughout 2021, however, buyers could still pick up new units that failed to sell. Not that there were too many of them, though.
Fiat 124 Spider
The Fiat 124 Spider is easily one of the most exciting entry-level sports cars money could buy. Or at least it had been, that is, until the vehicle was discontinued at the end of 2020.
This fun sports car shared most of its underpinnings with the Mazda MX5. The Fiat 124 does pack a different flat-four motor, which provides more power at low RPMs than its Japanese cousin.
Ferrari GTC4 Lusso
It’s fair to say that many petrolheads have already forgotten that this quirky shooting brake ever existed. The GTC4 Lusso may have been too weird even for die-hard Ferrari fans, despite being marketed as the practical Prancing Horse.
The Ferrari GTC4 Lusso has only been around for 4 years. The model was offered either with a 3.9L V8 or a 6.3L V12 beneath the hood. The model was discontinued at the end of the 2020 model year.
Dodge Charger Hellcat
We have already mentioned that Dodge is discontinuing the Challenger, as well as the Hellcat motor. Sadly, this also means that the time has come for the Dodge Charger to be discontinued. The model will no longer be available from 2024 onwards.
It’s no secret that both the Challenger and the Charger weren’t exactly high-tech. In fact, the Chrysler LX platform they’re both built on is pretty ancient.
Buyers who want to purchase a brand new Camaro only have a few more years to do so! General Motors is heading towards fully electrifying its lineup, and no gas-powered model was spared. The Camaro will be discontinued after the end of the 2023 model year.
GM has announced that the Camaro will be replaced by a fully electric sedan which will likely debut around 2023 and 2024.
Although The Kia Sedona has been on the market for nearly two decades, it was never as popular as most of its competitors. In fact, Kia managed to sell less than 5 000 units in 2021, while Chrysler had sold over 34 000 Pacificas within the same time range.
Kia will no longer sell the Sedona in 2022. The automaker has introduced a new model, the Kia Carnival, to replace it from the next year onwards.
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT
The American automaker did not officially announce the discontinuation of the high-performance SRT version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is, however, pretty obvious that it won’t appear on the market for the 2022 model year.
Jeep has disbanded its SRT division earlier this year, indicating that the Grand Cherokee SRT may be one of its final high-performance products. As the automotive world focuses on electric vehicles, it’s very unlikely that the Grand Cherokee SRT will return for future generations of this SUV.
Most petrolheads have probably never heard of the Nissan NV. After all, most of us aren’t too excited about panel vans and other utility vehicles. Perhaps the only cool feature of the Nissan NV is its optional V8 powerplant, as well as the standard V6 motor.
The NV nameplate first hit the US market back in 2012. The van will no longer be sold after the end of 2021.
The mighty Corvette has been around ever since the 1950s. It was developed to be America’s first sports car, good enough to compete with small European roadsters. The model was off to a rocky start and nearly got discontinued just weeks after its debut.
GM quickly addressed the issue with the original ’53 Vette, and the car has been a hit ever since. The automaker confirmed a fully electric Corvette to hit the market in 2023, indicating that the gas-powered variant may be coming to an end. The discontinuation of the Corvette is just a rumor at this point, though.
