The narrator's friend wrestled the knife away and, in the struggle, stabbed the lover. His wife jumped on his back to protect the man, and she was also stabbed in the frenzy. The friend was able to grab the baby and call 911. Neighbors heard the commotion and the friend's murderous threats, and the police arrived shortly after. He was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder. Although extenuating circumstances prevented him from getting a harsher sentence, he nonetheless served ten years in prison.
A Downward Spiral With A Chilling Conclusion
As far as our narrator was concerned, their cousin was someone to be admired when they were growing up. By that, they meant he was cool, sharp-dressed, and full of stories. Unfortunately, what they didn't know was that behind this image, he increasingly struggled with a methamphetamine addiction.
Eventually, his paranoia escalated until he became confrontational, to the point of picking fights with total strangers minding their own business. Unfortunately, he ended up bringing this chaotic behavior to the wrong people. He was killed in a drive-by shooting, and our narrator ended up serving as a pallbearer at his funeral.
Two People Brought Low By The Same Vice
The youngest stepbrother of our narrator's wife had struggled with an intravenous narcotics addiction, as had his older brother. The older brother was arrested for car theft and other offenses and spent a few months in jail.
While he was incarcerated, the youngest went to rehab and got clean. Sadly, it seems that the draw of his addiction was simply too powerful. Tragically, just two days after the older brother was released and returned home, the youngest was found dead in his room with a needle in his arm, having overdosed at the age of 19.
